A Brief History of Iowa
Long before European explorers arrived, the land we now call Iowa was home to Paleo-Indians, with archaeological evidence dating human presence as far back as 14,000 years ago. Effigy mound builders shaped the landscape by constructing earthen animal effigies along the Mississippi River corridor from around 300 CE until the 17th century. French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette traversed the region in 1673, but permanent Euro-American settlement only took hold in the 1830s after the United States acquired the territory via the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. On December 28, 1846, Iowa was admitted as the 29th state of the Union, its rolling prairies and fertile valleys laying the foundation for an agriculture-based economy that would earn it a place at the heart of America’s Corn Belt. Over the next century, railroads and river traffic spurred rapid growth, and by 1900 Iowa had evolved into one of the nation’s leading producers of corn, soybeans, and hogs. Today, Iowa’s diversified economy spans manufacturing, biotechnology, and services, all resting upon the rich legacy of its pioneer past.
